But what if that cause isn't a something, but a someone? A person. The particulars aren't that important. You're a dedicated servant. A best friend. A soldier. brainwashed to know no better. A bodyguard charged to protect. Somebody who ended up here along the way and just felt like you need to take care of this person because they'll probably trip on their own shoelaces. Maybe they're too delicate for this world and you want to keep them innocent. Whether the person you're tangled up with has a mission themselves or are merely living their life, somebody has to look out for them. This resolve may be easier to keep before you realize than your feelings towards them are beyond platonically protective; if you're the sort to put all thoughts into the mission, this new distraction may be confusion. Parents Need Love, Too.

In general, there's an understanding that deciding to have a child is a commitment. Most parents, planned or accidental, attempt to do what's best by their child. Of course, it may not always end up that way, but there's at least effort put towards it. But there's a lot of effort needed in every aspect of childrearing, whether the kid is a newborn baby or an older child. If both parents decide to stay together, their own relationship may have to take second fiddle to this force of nature that's entered your life.

It's important, though, to not let that relationship and its care fall by the wayside. Those who only bond through the child will be in for a rude awakening when they look up one day and realize they're with a stranger. Don't ignore those needs, either. Physical intimacy is important! So, at least once in a while, put your precious cargo to bed and remind each other how you got here in the first place

When you think about it, things like “humanity” and “personhood” are really just points of view. So what if your body or your abilities don't exactly match up to the Homo Sapiens norm? That doesn't defy your sentiency nor your agency. Does your body, similar or not so similar to humans, negate your thoughts? Your will? Your feelings? ...your feelings for someone else? Ah, that might be the catch. The person is a friend, a teammate, or even someone admired from far away. You're conflicted over them. You may even love them. The problem is, of course, not that they don't see you in that way in return. Well, part of it might be, but the biggest part as they don't even see you as human enough to consider in a romantic way. They could be friendly, kind, indifferent, or, worst of all, treat you like a pet. Perhaps they know about you having a different form, if you do have one, perhaps not. You can only take so much.

A slave/reluctant master romance(?) meme

The seed of the idea has existed for ages, perhaps as long as there has been the concept of enemies among humanity - so, a long time. It goes as follows:

You are in an unfamiliar and dangerous territory, most likely the home of your enemy. Whether there is a war raging in the background or just barely-bandaged hostility is irrelevant. Your safety does not depend on that. Instead, you are an example. Your freedom is forfeit. A prisoner is what you are...no, you're a slave. And you're given to someone for service or for entertainment.

You're prepared to hate your new "master." Who wouldn't? Slowly, however, you realize that things aren't as they seem. Your master is no cruel owner; in fact, they don't even want to own you. But they are as much of a pawn in this scheme as you are. Still, they show you kindness and their subtle rebellion fans the flames of your own. Over time, your feelings towards them begin to change. It may be some sort of Stockholm Syndrome or it may be a true emotion, yet either way, something fragile and perhaps even beautiful is growing between the the two of you. Could this be love? If it is or if it isn't, there's one certainty: if you are found out, it will be the end, most likely, of you both.

This is the situation your character finds themselves in. Are they master? Slave? How do they accept their fate? Their new feelings towards their "master"/"slave"? All of this is up to you, as well as how this all ends for the pair.

Of course, there's a precedent for it ending badly and bloody, for obvious reasons.

There is a centuries-old tradition in Japan of well-to-do families with no or only female children to adopt a male heir to carry on the family name and business. It's at a dead end, with no one to possibly carry on the line and the family name. Well, there's you, but you don't really count. At least, you can't do those tasks alone. When both of you are ready, you're to be married. In fact, that time is approaching - or, oh, it's already here! So, how do you feel about all of this? Surely, you view them as a brother or a sister. ...unless you actually do have feelings for them, and matter turns out to be much more difficult than you'd think with a pre-prepared spouse!
